Partner Program & PRM Software Glossary
Every term a partnership manager, SaaS founder, or CRO needs to know — defined clearly, with context for building partner programs.
- Affiliate Partner
A partner who promotes a vendor's product through content or referral links in exchange for commission on leads or sales they generate. Unlike resellers, affiliates do not purchase the product themselves.
In SaaS partner programs, affiliate partners typically earn a flat fee or percentage of first-year revenue per converted referral.
- Account Mapping
The process of identifying shared or overlapping accounts between a vendor and partner to prioritise co-selling opportunities and avoid channel conflict.
Account mapping is the first step in most co-selling motions. It reveals where both sides have existing relationships with the same prospect.
- Activation Rate
The percentage of recruited partners who complete onboarding and submit their first deal or lead within a defined period — typically 30–90 days.
A high activation rate (above 60%) indicates effective onboarding. CinnaLab.io's AI-guided onboarding is specifically designed to maximise activation rates.
- Affiliate Program
A performance-based marketing arrangement where third parties (affiliates) promote a product and earn a commission when their referrals convert. Key components include commission rate, cookie duration, tracking links, and payout processing.
CinnaLab.io includes a built-in Affiliate Program Engine with click tracking, UTM link generation, tiered commissions, and automated PayPal/Wise payouts.
- BANT Scoring
A lead qualification framework evaluating: Budget (does the prospect have funds?), Authority (are they the decision-maker?), Need (do they have a relevant problem?), and Timeline (how urgently are they buying?).
BANT scoring filters low-quality partner leads before they enter your CRM pipeline. CinnaLab.io automatically BANT-scores every lead submitted by a partner.
- Battle Card
A concise competitive intelligence document given to partners to help them position a vendor's product against specific competitors during sales conversations.
Battle cards cover competitor weaknesses, your product's differentiators, objection handling, and proof points. They live in the Knowledge Base.
- Channel Conflict
A situation where two or more partners, or a partner and the vendor's direct sales team, compete for the same customer or deal.
Deal registration is the primary mechanism for preventing channel conflict. When a partner registers a deal, the vendor commits to protecting that opportunity.
- Channel Partner
Any external company or individual that sells, resells, or promotes a vendor's product through an indirect sales motion.
Channel partners include resellers, referral partners, affiliates, systems integrators, MSPs, and technology partners. Managing these relationships at scale is what PRM software is designed for.
- Channel Sales
Revenue generated through third-party partner organisations rather than a vendor's own direct sales team. Also referred to as indirect sales.
For SaaS companies, channel sales typically carries lower customer acquisition costs than direct sales because partners bring their own customer relationships.
- Co-Marketing
Joint marketing activities executed between a vendor and a partner to generate leads or build brand awareness in shared target markets.
Co-marketing activities include joint webinars, co-branded content, shared advertising, and event sponsorships. Market Development Funds (MDF) often fund co-marketing.
- Co-Selling
A sales motion where the vendor and partner jointly pursue a deal, combining their respective customer relationships and expertise.
Co-selling is most common with technology partners and systems integrators who need the vendor's product knowledge alongside their own implementation expertise.
- Commission
A financial incentive paid to a partner for generating a sale, typically calculated as a percentage of deal value.
Commission rates in SaaS partner programs typically range from 10–35% of first-year contract value depending on partner type and tier. CinnaLab.io automatically calculates commission on every registered deal.
- Deal Registration
The formal process by which a partner submits a sales opportunity to a vendor to claim protection and credit for that prospect, preventing channel conflict.
Deal registration is one of the most important features in any PRM. Without it, partners lose confidence in the program and stop investing effort.
- Distributor
A two-tier channel partner that purchases products from a vendor and sells them to resellers rather than selling directly to end customers.
Distributors are common in hardware and traditional software. When involved, PRM platforms need to support multi-tier partner management.
- Ecosystem
The complete network of partners, technology integrations, and complementary vendors that create value around a vendor's core platform.
Building an ecosystem is a strategic goal beyond running a partner program. Each new partner or integration makes the platform more valuable to all others.
- Enablement
The training, tools, content, and support provided to partners to help them understand, position, sell, and implement a vendor's product effectively.
Partner enablement includes product training, certification, playbook distribution, battle cards, and knowledge base access. CinnaLab.io delivers enablement through its e-learning module and knowledge base.
- E-Learning
Online, self-paced training delivered through a learning management system (LMS), enabling partners to complete product training and certification on their own schedule.
E-learning dramatically reduces the cost of partner training compared to instructor-led sessions. CinnaLab.io integrates with Moodle to deliver e-learning inside the partner portal.
- Go-To-Market (GTM)
The strategy and plan defining how a company will reach its target customers, including which sales channels (direct, partner, marketplace) it will use.
For SaaS companies with partner channels, GTM strategy includes decisions about partner types, incentive structures, and coordination between direct and indirect sales.
- Indirect Sales
Revenue generated through channel partners rather than a company's own sales team. The opposite of direct sales.
For many SaaS companies, indirect sales can generate 20–60% of total ARR at lower cost than direct sales. CinnaLab.io provides the infrastructure to track, manage, and scale it.
- ISV (Independent Software Vendor)
A company that builds software products or integrations that run on top of or alongside another vendor's platform, creating complementary value for shared customers.
ISV partners typically earn revenue through referrals, revenue share, or marketplace listings. Managing ISV relationships requires tracking both technical integrations and commercial agreements.
- Joint Business Plan (JBP)
A formal, co-created document between a vendor and strategic partner setting shared revenue goals, joint activities, and performance accountability for a defined period.
JBPs are typically reserved for Platinum or top-tier partners. They align both sides around specific pipeline targets, marketing activities, and investment levels. QBRs review progress against the JBP.
- KPI (Key Performance Indicator)
A measurable metric used to evaluate the performance of a partner program, individual partners, or partner managers against defined goals.
Core partner KPIs include: partner-sourced ARR, activation rate, time to first deal, deal conversion rate, and partner engagement score. CinnaLab.io's dashboards surface all of these in real time.
- Knowledge Base
A centralised, searchable repository of documentation, playbooks, product guides, and collateral accessible to partners through the partner portal.
A well-maintained knowledge base reduces partner support burden by letting partners self-serve answers. CinnaLab.io's knowledge base is AI-powered — the chatbot surfaces relevant articles automatically.
- Lead Registration
The act of a partner formally submitting a prospect's details into a vendor's system to establish that the partner sourced or is actively working that prospect.
Lead registration is the earlier-stage equivalent of deal registration. CinnaLab.io supports both with BANT scoring to automatically qualify submissions.
- Lead Sharing
The practice of a vendor distributing qualified leads to channel partners for follow-up, often with a reverse commission paid by the partner to the vendor.
Lead sharing enables vendors to leverage partner local presence and relationships. CinnaLab.io supports lead sharing with reverse commission tracking.
- Market Development Funds (MDF)
Budget provided by a vendor to channel partners to fund joint marketing activities such as events, advertising, webinars, or content creation.
MDF programs require partners to submit activity proposals for approval, execute them, and provide proof of execution to claim reimbursement. Typically a benefit of higher partner tiers.
- MSP (Managed Service Provider)
A partner type that delivers ongoing managed services to end customers, typically bundling the vendor's software as part of a broader technology or support offering.
MSP partners often have long-term contracts with their customers and are highly motivated to recommend embedded SaaS tools. They typically earn recurring commissions.
- Partner Onboarding
The structured process of activating a newly recruited partner: completing agreements, training, certifications, and guiding them to their first registered deal.
The quality of partner onboarding is the single biggest predictor of long-term partner success. CinnaLab.io automates the entire onboarding flow with AI guidance.
- Partner Certification
A formal credential issued to a partner upon completing defined training requirements, validating their knowledge of a vendor's product.
Certifications control which partners can sell certain products or reach higher tiers. CinnaLab.io issues certificates automatically on training completion and manages expiry and renewal reminders.
- Partner Manager (PAM)
The vendor-side employee responsible for managing relationships with a portfolio of channel partners, driving their activation, enablement, and revenue performance.
A partner manager typically owns 20–50 partner relationships and is measured on partner-sourced revenue, activation rates, and satisfaction. CinnaLab.io's Growth plan includes 10 PAM seats.
- Partner Portal
A secure, dedicated web interface where partners access training content, deal registration, collateral, performance data, and support tools.
CinnaLab.io's partner portal is AI-powered — the embedded chatbot answers partner questions 24/7 without requiring manual support from your team.
- Partner Program
A structured framework defining how a vendor recruits, enables, rewards, and manages its channel partners, including partner types, tiers, benefits, requirements, and sales motions.
CinnaLab.io's Partner Program Designer lets vendors build this structure in minutes — tiers, commission models, onboarding journeys, and certification requirements.
- Partner Relationship Management (PRM)
A software category designed to help vendors manage the complete lifecycle of their channel partner relationships — from recruitment and onboarding to deal management, enablement, and performance tracking.
PRM software is distinct from CRM software. CRM manages direct customer relationships; PRM manages indirect partner relationships. CinnaLab.io is an AI-powered PRM available from $0/month.
- Partner-Sourced ARR
Annual Recurring Revenue sourced, influenced, or closed by channel partners rather than the vendor's direct sales team.
Partner-sourced ARR is the primary financial metric by which channel programs are evaluated. For mature SaaS companies it can represent 30–60% of total revenue. CinnaLab.io tracks this in real time with full partner attribution.
- Partner Tiers
Levels within a partner program — typically Platinum, Gold, and Silver — each with defined qualification criteria and corresponding benefits.
Partner tiers create a clear progression path that motivates partners to invest more deeply in the relationship to achieve higher benefits. CinnaLab.io's Program Designer lets vendors build custom tier structures.
- Pipeline
The collection of active sales opportunities at various stages of the sales process, tracked in a CRM and measured by total value and expected close dates.
In partner programs, pipeline is managed jointly — partners register deals, vendors approve and track them, and both monitor health. CinnaLab.io's deal pipeline syncs with HubSpot and Salesforce.
- Partner Success Plan
A joint business plan agreed between a vendor and a specific partner, defining revenue targets, lead targets, key initiatives, and review cadence for a given period.
Success plans create accountability and align vendor and partner go-to-market efforts. CinnaLab.io includes success plan management on the Growth plan.
- Program Automation
If/then workflow rules that execute automatically when partner lifecycle events occur — such as notifying managers when deals stall, upgrading tiers when targets are hit, or triggering campaigns when onboarding completes.
CinnaLab.io offers 10+ trigger types and 8+ action types for partner program automation, available on the Starter plan and above.
- Partner Directory
A partner marketplace is a product catalog and ordering system embedded in PRM software. It allows vendors to list products with partner-specific pricing, and enables channel partners to browse, submit purchase orders, and manage invoices within the partner portal.
CinnaLab.io includes a full marketplace module with product catalog, pricing policies, PO workflow, and invoice management.
- Purchase Order (PO)
A purchase order in partner management is a formal request from a channel partner to purchase products from the vendor catalog. PRM software like CinnaLab.io automates PO submission, vendor approval, fulfillment tracking, and invoice generation.
The partner marketplace streamlines PO processing from cart to invoice automatically.
- Partner Marketing
Partner marketing encompasses all co-marketing activities between vendors and their channel partners, including email campaigns, co-branded content, market development funds (MDF), partner events, and demand generation programs managed through PRM software.
CinnaLab.io centralizes partner marketing with campaigns, announcements, MDF, and events inside the PRM.
- Partner Recruitment Funnel
A partner recruitment funnel is a structured pipeline for attracting, qualifying, and onboarding new channel partners. It includes application forms, screening criteria, nurture sequences, and approval workflows.
CinnaLab.io automates the entire recruitment funnel from public application to active partner.
- QBR (Quarterly Business Review)
A structured meeting held every quarter between a vendor's partner manager and a partner to review performance, discuss pipeline, address issues, and align on joint plans for the next quarter.
QBRs are the primary cadence for managing strategic partner relationships. CinnaLab.io's dashboards are designed to make QBR prep fast and data-driven.
- Rebate
A retrospective financial reward paid to partners when they reach defined performance milestones such as quarterly revenue targets or volume thresholds.
Unlike upfront commission paid per deal, rebates are paid after a partner achieves a cumulative goal. They incentivise sustained performance over a period.
- Referral Partner
A partner who introduces qualified prospects to a vendor without managing the full sales cycle, earning a referral fee when the introduced prospect becomes a customer.
Referral programs are often the simplest partner program to launch. They require less enablement than reseller programs and generate high-trust introductions.
- Reseller
A channel partner that purchases a vendor's product (or licences it at a discount) and sells it to end customers, typically at a margin.
Resellers are the most common partner type in SaaS. They own the customer relationship and typically require more enablement, training, and operational support than referral partners.
- Systems Integrator (SI)
A partner that specialises in implementing, customising, and integrating software for end customers, often combining multiple vendor products into a complete solution.
Systems integrators are high-value partners for complex SaaS products requiring significant configuration or integration work. Compensated through services revenue and sometimes product margin.
- Technology Partner
A company that builds a technical integration between their product and a vendor's platform, creating complementary value for shared customers.
Technology partnerships drive product adoption and ecosystem value. Typically managed with different motions than commercial partner programs — focused on integration quality and joint go-to-market.
- Time to First Deal
The number of days between a partner's recruitment and the submission of their first registered deal or lead.
Industry average for manual onboarding is 60–90 days. CinnaLab.io customers using AI-guided onboarding typically see first deals registered within 14–21 days.
