How to Build and Manage an Affiliate Program for Your SaaS Product
What Is an Affiliate Program?
An affiliate program is a performance-based marketing arrangement where third parties (affiliates) promote your product and earn a commission when they refer new customers. Unlike resellers, affiliates typically don't sell directly — they drive traffic or leads that convert to customers.
Designing Your Commission Structure
For SaaS products, common commission models include:
Recurring commission — affiliate earns a % of MRR for as long as the referred customer stays. Example: 20% of MRR for 12 months.
One-time deal commission — affiliate earns a % of the first payment or annual contract value. Example: 15% of the first-year subscription.
Lead commission — affiliate earns a fixed fee per qualified lead, regardless of conversion. Example: $50 per qualified demo booking.
Tiered commission — commission rate increases with volume. Example: 10% for first 5 conversions/month, 15% for 6–15, 20% for 16+.
Cookie Duration
Cookie duration determines how long after a click an affiliate receives credit for a conversion. Typical SaaS affiliate cookie windows range from 30 days (standard) to 365 days (maximum loyalty).
